Filtronic, a four-time winner of the King’s/Queen’s Awards and a 2024 King’s Award for Innovation winner, earned accolades for the design and manufacture of its Cerus E-band Solid State Power Amplifier (SSPA). This supports a range of communications applications, including satellite communications. Previously, the supply chain for E-band high-power amplifiers was costly, customised and over-engineered, targeting primarily the US Defence market.

Filtronic innovated by designing a high-frequency, compact amplifier suitable for multiple applications where performance and latency are crucial. The team perfected power-combining and phase-matching of semiconductor devices; techniques previously confined to lab environments. The result is the successful Cerus SSPA product range, which has attracted significant interest, including large orders recently from SpaceX for its Starlink™ network.
