- 2023 Sustainable Development
Clayworks is one of 148 organisations nationally to be recognised with a prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise. Clayworks has been recognised for its excellence in Sustainability.
Employing 23 people on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall, Clayworks was established in 2010 as a successor to Cob in Cornwall, founded by Adam Weismann and Katy Bryce. The company manufactures natural clay plasters for interior wall and ceiling finishes. The plasters, which can be pigmented, replace the more conventional gypsum plaster and paint surface finishes. Clay plasters have very low embedded carbon, no plastic or metal packaging and do not require painting.
Adam Weismann, Founding Director of Clayworks, says: “We are thrilled to have been awarded the King’s Award for Sustainability for 2023. Sustainability is at the core of what we do at Clayworks and to have gone through such a rigorous judging criteria such as the King’s Award is a real honour.”
The Awards programme, now in its 57th year, is the most prestigious business award in the country, with successful businesses able to use the esteemed King’s Awards emblem for the next five years.
Clayworks has led the world in making natural clay plasters convenient, desirable, contemporary and mainstream. Major markets include the Middle East, Asia, America, Europe and UK.
Traditionally an eco-niche, humble material, dug up and used directly on site, Clayworks took an altogether different approach to branding, marketing and sales, creating a luxury, high performance product available for anybody, anywhere in the world.
Clay building materials and finishes are not taught in architecture schools. Clayworks has led the way by directly educating architects globally about the benefits of clay and how to use its finishes. It leads by providing all of the information architects need to be able to specify clay in their buildings.
Clayworks was the first natural plaster company in the world to publish Environmental Product Declarations, Health Product Declarations, Low VOC Emissions Certificates, Light Reflectance Value Certificates and fire certificates. The thought and action leadership has inspired an entire industry to attract wider audiences by helping them find the answers, information, data and analysis. It has also led to the company forging aligned partnerships, blog and editorial opportunities and collaborations.
